ALICE NAJARIAN Obituary

Alice Najarian passed away peacefully at home, in Troy, Michigan, with her family beside her on July 4, 2017, two days before her 99th birthday. Born in Middleboro, Massachusetts, on July 6, 1918, she was the daughter of Nazareth and Voskehad (Shahbazian) Zrehikian. The family moved to Detroit when Alice was a young girl. She received her education and graduated from Northern High School. A talented girl, Alice played the piano. She had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir of St. Vartan Armenian Catholic Church, starting in its formative years at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and continuing through the years at the new St. Vartan's church building, on Greenfield Road. Multitalented, Alice was privileged to participate in radio broadcasts at WXYZ located in Detroit's Arts Center area. At one time, Alice also worked in the great downtown toy department of J.L. Hudson's Department Store. Alice married Dr. Simone Najarian in 1938 and became a devoted wife, mother and eventually a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. She dutifully maintained the home and family when her husband entered the military service. Alice always encouraged her sons to extend their horizons to ever higher goals. Upon Simone's return to his private dental practice in civilian life, the family enjoyed many years together, especially trips to their cottage on Lake Erie. After her sons went to college, Alice expanded her educational talents, as well, by attending Highland Park Community College. She then went on to Wayne State University and earned, with honors, her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Thereafter, Alice happily taught elementary and middle school students as a substitute teacher in Birmingham. Alice and Simone were very active in the community together. Alice was a member of the Armenian Red Cross Highland Park Chapter, where she enjoyed attending with her mother-in-law, Christineh. Due to her philanthropic spirit, she became a Charter Member of the Armenian Renassance Association in Michigan, whose mission, as a non-profit organization, is to support artistic, cultural and ethnic awareness causes, in addition to awarding college scholarships to deserving students. Alice Najarian lived an exemplary life and leaves to her family and loved ones a cherished legacy of dedication, support, generosity and love. ......FAMILY MEMBERS: Beloved wife of the late Dr. Simone Najarian.
