AREK KHACHATURIAN Obituary

Arek Khachaturian moved to the United States in 1950 when he was 18 years old, after learning English from BBC radio. Like so many before him, Arek came to the United States to explore the possibilities and opportunities that the United States had to offer. Arek worked his way through his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Illinois. He then made his way to Michigan, where he worked while doing graduate work in chemistry at Wayne State University. Upon Arek's arrival to Detroit, he connected with a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Selvian, who would deeply influence him and bring him into the strong Armenian community at St. John Armenian Church. As part of that community, Arek checked coats for events at the Armenian Cultural Hall and taught Armenian, which is how he met his future wife of almost 50 years, Diane. Arek was a research chemist for years. He was charged with solving problems no one else at the company could, he obtained multiple patents, and he became a U.S. citizen because of his work. Arek retired from the research field to pursue his true passion - finance. He approached it in the same way he did learning English and chemistry - by reading and listening to anything and everything he could. And he was just as successful at it. If you knew Arek, you would know that notwithstanding his professional achievements, Arek always prioritized his family. He spent countless hours providing support to and entertainment for his children, and made each member of his family more than they would have been without him. Arek lived up to a standard of excellence that he infused onto and into his family. He deeply loved his wife and showed her that daily in his words and actions. They were soulmates. .................Beloved husband of Diane. Cherished father of Lee Khachaturian and Mark Haig Khachaturian.
